Pick up The Wall Street Journal, USA Today or any other major publication, and a new book is hailed as THE business leadership book to read. You can’t walk into a bookstore without finding the latest, greatest books on leadership and business displayed front-and-center. Talk to one of your colleagues and they will tell you about the book you ‘simply must read.’ Seems to me one could spend a lifetime doing nothing but reading. So the question is: Does your success depend on regularly reading business leadership books?
OK, I admit I’m a book junkie. I like having books around me. I like reading books and I believe I could never have too many books. My shelves are filled with books…on leadership, communication, business, philosophy, team-building, sales. You name it, I probably have a book on the subject. But why do I bother, and why should you bother reading books?
Every book you read gives you a new idea, a different way of thinking about something, a novel way to handle a problem, a concept to consider, a lesson, information…something. Books are like a kaleidoscope. As we turn the kaleidoscope the picture changes. When we read, our thinking, beliefs, views and behavior change. Our picture of the world changes, and thus our approach changes. So, will reading business leadership books guarantee your success? Probably not, but as George Carlin says, “The status quo sucks.” If status quo is your idea of success, then reading books is a waste of your time and money. On the other hand…..
