Leadership In Business: Negotiation Skills for Women

Women have always worked shoulder to should with men in all fields and have been just as successful. The first and foremost  requirement for good leadership in business for women is the necessity to be firm and assertive. The problem with women and their communication skills is that they often come across as too shy (polite) or too pushy (arrogant). Either way you will lose your hold on your team and clients, causing heavy losses for your organization.

For women leaders good leadership skills means mastering the art of negotiation; for they need to negotiate successfully both internally (among their peers and with their seniors) and externally with customers.

Is mastering negotiating skills a difficult task? Most successful women would answer with an emphatic ‘no’. However, this is undeniably a vital aspect of leadership in business both internally and externally.

The first step towards acquiring good negotiating skills is that you internalize the fact that biologically the mind and thought process of women is very different from that of men. In other words, emulating the way men negotiate and carry out business would not be beneficial to women leaders. They would come across as insensitive, pushy, and egotistic – all attributes that are counter to the development of good communication skills.

To master negation skills women leaders need to work with and not against their feminine attributes such as caring nature, a vulnerable personality, flexibility in thought, body language, and so on.

As a woman leader, the toughest task would be to balance authority with participatory management. Promoting good communication skills in the workplace should not mean that you are bound to act on every feedback or communiqué that comes your way; rather, that you are open to new ideas, different views, ideas for improvement, and warnings (when things look like they are going wrong). This would be end up improving the outcome of the organization as well as motivating employee performance for they would feel appreciated and ‘part of the organization’.

The best business communication skills means you can say and get what you want without damaging the relationship with clients. In other words good leadership skills would mean that you can negotiate better because you ARE a woman and not IN SPITE of being a woman.
