How to Handle the Fallout When Terminating Key Executives

Ask any boss what part of their job they dread the most and they’re likely to tell you that it’s about terminating key executives.

 It’s never a good thing when you have to be the bearer of bad news but it’s exceptionally worse when they’re put in the position of terminating key executives

Whether a key executive has worked for a long time in the company or is a relatively new hire, terminating key executives always has repercussions.

 It can range from having a key position that needs to be filled immediately to a ripple effect within the working environment. That is why executives need to have great business communication skills when it comes to terminating key executives or anyone for that matter.

Having good business communication skills is a must for any executive who wishes to run a successful organization but the skill all boils down to people skills.

When firing a key company player, executives often take a lot of time to weigh the pros and cons, taking into consideration what it could mean for the business. 

When it comes to the point that they’ve decided to let someone go, they need to make use of business communication skills in order to present the reasons as to why they’re being let go. If it’s a key position, it’s obviously not just because of personal reasons as to why they’re being fired. 

Executives need to be able to explain the reason for termination from a business perspective.

Now in the eyes of the rest of the company employees, terminating a key executive can create some unrest.

 If someone in that position who’s worked long and hard for the company can be terminated, others are bound to start thinking that it can definitely happen to them as well.

 As their boss, you also need to be able to explain that it’s all about the business in so many words. 

You need to be able to figure out how much you need to share with your employees about why that key player got fired without giving them any negative notions of the person itself.

You also need to be able to explain what it means for the business to have to terminate anyone who’s giving a certain level of performance or making certain decisions, and what specifically this action means for other key executives and employees in your organization.

Consider that when terminating a key executive, the employees who looked up to that persona as their mentors or superiors, this action may affect their attitude and/or work ethic. 

Being able to explain to the terminated key executive’s direct reports why their leader was let go will help to ease internal stress and chaos.

As a boss, you can capitalize on your business communication skills not only to make terminating key executives easier but also to handle the fallout of their departure.
